Your heart is the MOST important ORGAN in your body. It keeps you alive by allowing your blood to deliver essential oxygen to the cells in your body. Without your heart, you would die.
In real life, heart attacks and brain attacks (otherwise known as strokes) do not always announce themselves in a dramatic manner. In fact, some warning signs of a heart attack and stroke are easily dismissed or ignored that you might not even be aware until it is too late! If you, or someone you know, experience any of the following tell-tale warning symptoms and signs of a heart attack, or stroke, listed below, do call for medical assistance or an ambulance immediately. Early action may save a life!
Fatigue maybe a symptom of heart failure. Being tired easily, and/or reduced effort tolerance may suggest a weak heart or impaired blood flow to the heart (coronary artery blockages).
When blood supply to the heart muscle is reduced due to “artery blockage” (a condition known as coronary artery disease), it makes the heart “cry out in pain”. This is classically felt as a central chest tightness which radiate to the jaw and left arm. The medical term for this type of heart pains is “angina pectoris”. However, angina do not always present classically…sometimes it is also felt in the shoulders, arms, back, jaw, or abdomen. These symptoms are particularly suggestive of a heart blockage if they worsen with exertion, but get better with rest. Other symptoms which may be associated with heart blockages include dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, nausea or vomiting.
It is often very difficult to differentiate abnormal “shortness of breath” from generalized lack of fitness. If you feel that your effort tolerance is reduced, or if you are more short of breath than usual, you should see your doctor or physician for further evaluation.
Leg, ankle, or foot swelling — the kind that leaves an indentation if you press your finger into it — could be a sign of heart failure. It may also could be caused by a variety of other medical conditions including kidney disease, liver failure, or inefficient blood flow in your legs (venous insufficiency).
Palpitations are the perceived abnormality of the heartbeat characterized by awareness of heart muscle contractions. Most palpitations are harmless. They can be caused by anxiety, caffeine intake, or dehydration to the body. But sometimes palpitations may indicate a heart problem. It’s important to note how your palpitations feel, how often they occur, and what you’re doing when you experience them. Palpitations maybe fast or slow, regular or irregular. If frequent, you should consider consulting with your cardiologist.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Malaysia.
According to the Department of Statistic Malaysia, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in Malaysia. One of the biggest misconceptions about coronary heart disease is that it only affects men. While many women may think their main health risk is breast cancer, more women die from heart disease each year than from all types of cancers combined.
